Hey everybody! We’re back and long overdue for a Lily post! Sorry for the long delay.. I didn’t want to make you all suffer through my rambling without some precious Lily pictures to break it up. I got my camera back today, so now we have to catch up.
Let’s see if I can remember (in order) all the happenings in our life over the last few weeks. First, Uncle Shawn, Auntie Shannon, and Cousins Tali and Eanna came to visit for a few days (Aug 13-15), which was fun! We wish we had more time to spend with them, but we still had to work during the day and Shannon had her conference. We did get to see them most nights for dinner and some chat, so that was great… seeing them multiple days in a row, I think that’s the first time that’s happened! We love it! After they left I had my birthday, which was low key but fun. Lisa came over during the day and gave me some ideas for organizing my house, then Lisa and Greggy and I went out to lunch. Afterwards, Mom and Dad came over and I opened some presents then they watched Lily while Jason and I went out to dinner and a movie (Tropic Thunder - somewhat crude, but HI-LAR-IOUS!). Sadly, I don’t remember much of what happened the rest of the week… we worked a lot, I know that!! The following Friday the 22nd I went to a wine and cheese tasting bridal shower, which was pretty fun. I may be weird but I just really never got into red wine. It smells like feet. Anyway, the next day (the 23rd) was Auntie Lisa’s super-special 30th birthday! WOOHOO!! Lily and I met Lisa and Ryan (and Claire and Abby), and Lisa’s best friend Amanda, her husband Ben, and their son Atticus at como zoo for the day. It was an amazingly quiet day considering we were carting around 4 babies all day! Lily was VERY good, and this time I took her through the butterfly garden which she really seemed to like. She just kept staring all around her like she couldn’t believe it was real - it was fun to watch. After that, Lisa, Ryan, and I took Claire, Abby, and Lily on the carousel! Lily’s first carousel ride. She absolutely hated it. She was ok sitting on the horse but once it started to move up and down she freaked out and started crying and clawing at my shirt to stop moving!! I tried to calm her down and put her in a different spot, etc, but she just was not having it so I ended up standing in the middle of the ride holding her until it ended. Claire and Abby seemed to enjoy it much more (or at least be more indifferent!) and they rode their horses the whole time without incident. Oh well, I think it’s worth trying again some day! After the zoo we met up with Mom and Dad and Greggy and Jason at Buca di Beppo in St. Paul, then we all went back to Lisa’s house for cake and presents. It was a fun night!
Let’s see.. the following week we worked a LOT (what a shock). I ended up even bringing Lily into work on Thursday (normally a work-from-home day for me) to take care of a few projects. I mostly wore her around in the Bjorn and some other people in my office helped watch her.. she was very, very good and let me get a lot of work done! I even got her to fall asleep in the Bjorn while facing towards me and she napped that way for 45 minutes while I worked - awesome! Finally, the big finale - this weekend! My Dad and Brother have been coming over the last few weekends to help us build a deck in our backyard (WOOHOO!). Today was a large group - Jason and I (Lily), Mom and Dad, Greg, and Lisa and Ryan (with Claire and Abby). The boys all got working on the deck project while Mom and Lisa and I took care of babies, then Mom watched babies while Lisa and I reorganized my kitchen! Lisa is really good at organizing, and I pretty much suck at it so she came over to help rearrange my life (or my house.. at least my kitchen!) to be less stressful! It seems a lot more functional now and she is an AMAZING person for tackling my scattered mess!! Everyone is coming back over again tomorrow to continue work on the deck. It should be ready in another week or two and I can hardly wait!!
Ok, well that pretty much catches us up on activities! Let’s see if there’s any more exciting Lily news.. she still does NOT want to crawl but somehow gets just about anywhere she wants to be. She pulls up to stand on EVERYTHING and walks while holding on to us or the furniture. She LOVES to be standing. I love watching her figure out how to get somewhere or do something without breaking down and crawling (I know she CAN do it, she just refuses to - no idea why!). The other day she started doing what I’m calling “baby cartwheels”. She starts out in a sitting position, then leans to her left and gets on her hands and knees, then instead of crawling she swings her butt over to the other side (away from the side she came from) and sits on her butt again. Then she’ll repeat until she reaches what she wants. It’s quite funny to watch! She’s also gotten very brave with standing.. she will often let go of our hands and try to stand on her own, and even take a few steps. The other day I saw her in the middle of the living room floor looking for something to pull up on. When she realized it was all far away she rocked herself forward onto her knees and then put her foot on the ground and tried to stand up THAT way (similar to hands and knees position but with feet and hands). I just sat there and stared, with my mouth hanging open I’m sure. Luckily she isn’t QUITE there yet! Even this morning while sitting on our bed - Jason walked in with a bottle and she got so excited she bounced HARD a couple of times and used the momentum to stand up without pulling on anything. I am so not ready for this.. I can’t believe how fast she’s growing up! She’s gotten to be absolutely horrible to feed lately. She wants to do it all herself and it takes 3 times as long and is 98349839849384938493843984 times messier. She’s doing really well with table food, though, but man can she EAT! I was giving her bites of a pancake at Perkins the other day and I swear she ate about 1/2 of a pancake. HOLY COW! I can usually only put one bite in front of her at any given time or she’ll grab everything she can and shove it into her mouth at once.
She’s also realized that rolling back to tummy is not just for daytime/playing.. she figured out she can roll onto her tummy in her crib and SLEEP THAT WAY! I’m not too worried about it, because she’s good at rolling now and can usually get herself out of situations if she’s in danger, but a couple of times I’ve walked in to see something like the picture above. Since she scoots backwards instead of crawling forward, a lot of times she’ll get on her tummy and push herself back so her legs are sticking through the slats of the crib. I do worry about this a bit, that she’ll hurt herself or get “stuck” and not be able to flip back. I’ve thought about putting the bumpers back on her crib, but she seems to be getting better at not getting stuck, so I’m waiting to see if this is really going to be a problem.
I’m sure I’m forgetting some things because she seriously changes about every day, but that’s all my tired brain can remember right now. I’ll update more later! For now, I’ll leave you with this cute video of Lily “walking”. It was taken about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks ago, and she’s already gotten much, much better at taking steps, but you get the idea.. and she’s cute!
HAPPY LABOR DAY, EVERYONE!

Blog, Lily, vacation
We’re back! Our trip to Virginia was fantastic, and Lily was very, very good. Well, I did say I wouldn’t be surprised if Lily made a major development or two while we were gone, didn’t I? It’s not exactly the development I was expecting, but while we were in VA, Lily learned how to drive (pictured above)! We figured what better time for starting drivers ed than in a rental car in a totally different state? Ok, obviously I’m just kidding! I did expect that she might start to crawl, but she hasn’t done that yet. Instead, she did ALL of the following IN THE LAST WEEK (holy cow):
1. learn to feed herself her own bottle - including lifting it up when she starts to “suck air”
2. learn to sit herself up (going from laying down to sitting up without help)
3. PULL TO A STAND - her new favorite thing to do and she does it CONSTANTLY
4. After standing, hold onto the side of something (crib rail, etc) and WALK alongside it.
5. I honestly think she’s started trying to say some words (more on this later in the post)
Ok, WOW. Seriously if she doesn’t slow down I really WILL be updating talking about driver’s ed! It seems almost as if she has LESS interest in crawling then ever before. She can get on her hands and knees and rock back and forth (and scoot backwards) but she whines about it the whole time. She really just wants to stand up and take steps.. I really wonder if she might not skip the crawling stage entirely. As for saying words - she’s been able to say “mama” and “dada” for a few months, but it always SEEMED like just kind of babbling - like she didn’t know it was referring to Jason or I. The other day we noticed when Gibson walked in front of her that she said something that kind of sounds like “goo-gee”, but (how to explain this) the “tone” or pattern (?) of the word really sounded like “kitty”. Jason and I laughed and said “oh, look - she said kitty!” just totally kidding around of course. The weird thing is that I’ve now heard her make that EXACT same sound at least 2 more times when Gibson catches her eye, and I really wonder if she IS saying “kitty”? Maybe she can say “mama” and “dada” and mean it, too - but how do you know if she understands it? BABIES ARE SO UNCLEAR! heh
Ok, now about the trip! The flight went REALLY well - Lily hardly cried, slept quite a bit of the time, and managed to charm everyone in the seats around us. We just loved seeing Auntie Chandra, Uncle Aaron, and Cousins Akasha and Aria! The girls have grown so much and they’ve got such adorable personalities! They were both Lily’s little helpers all week long. We did far too much to post details about every day, so I’ll just pretty much summarize the highlights. One day we took the metro into DC and went to the International Spy Museum and out to dinner. Two times we went swimming in this cool pool at the aquatic center near Chandra and Aaron’s house. Another day, Jason, Lily, and I took the metro into DC again and visited the washington monument, the reflecting pool, and the lincoln memorial (we walked all up and down “the mall”). Lily sat out on their patio and “painted” with yogurt, which she liked, and we drove on “Skyline Drive” and had a picnic lunch in the Appalachian Mountains. Over all, we just had a GREAT time seeing everybody again and just visiting until late into the night.
Immediately when we got back into town we lowered Lily’s crib mattress to it’s lowest setting. We are planning on spending some time this week buying stuff to help baby-proof the house and will hopefully set it all up this weekend. I keep telling Jason that Lily is not going to wait for us to get our act together - she could start really moving ANY day and I think it’s going to go VERY quickly. We have more excitement this week as Uncle Shawn, Aunt Shannon, and Cousins Arian, Tali, and Eanna (I believe) are all going to be in town W-F because Shannon has a conference to go to for work. Thursday is also Grandma’s birthday, and Saturday is MY birthday. NEXT Saturday (the 23rd) is Auntie Lisa’s BIG 3-0 birthday, too! She’s looking for suggestions on how to celebrate (or mourn), so head over to Lambertville if you have any suggestions for her!
Finally, I’ll leave you with this cute Lily-video! This was just before we lowered her crib, and it’s not a great video because it doesn’t really show you what she can do - but she did it ALL herself. She pulled herself up to standing and is holding onto the crib rail and “walking” (side-stepping) up and down the crib a little bit, trying to get to the kitty. As you can tell, Gibson is THRILLED that she’s getting more mobile and wants to “pet” him! Enjoy!
P.S. I keep forgetting to mention that she also started CLAPPING a few weeks ago - it’s really cute! I have to try and get it on video.

Once again, I have been slacking on the blog posts - sorry! I’m not going to promise that it won’t happen again because it probably will. Last weekend my great-aunt Gloria and some of her kids and grandkids drove up from Illinois to visit. We try to see them about once a summer, but unfortunately they’ve been doing all the traveling the last number of years because my Grandma just can’t make the trip anymore. It’s always so good to see them! My Aunt Gloria started taking painting lessons 3 years ago at the ripe old age of 78.. and she’s really GOOD! She brought a painting to hang in my Grandma’s house and it’s just beautiful (I should have taken a picture - oops). We had a lovely picnic at my Grandma and Aunt’s house, and took a big family picture (below). Lily charmed everyone, of course, and they all fell completely in love with her. Also, we were talking about how Lily seems to want to walk way more than she wants to crawl, and my Aunt told me that learning to crawl is apparently very important for cognitive development related to reading - who knew?!? So, I GUESS it’s ok if Lily learns to crawl (like I have a say in it) - she’s already getting very, very close.
Well, internet, I feel like I should have so many more things to tell you, but my mind is blank right now. We spent a lot of time at Grandma and Grandpa’s this past week, and they keep threatening to kidnap Lily so I don’t take her away to Virginia for a week! Jason and have both been crazy-busy at work trying to get things wrapped up for us to be gone next week, then come back immediately into CRUNCH TIME! Mid-August to late September is the absolute WORST time of year for us, and I’m not looking forward to it - but at least we have a vacation first! I’ve also been running a bunch of errands and doing laundry and starting to pack, but tomorrow is “pack like crazy” day. My brother is picking us up at 4:30 AM (YUCK!!!!) on Sunday to bring us to the airport, so we have to get everything done before we go to bed tomorrow night. I plan on posting an update (with pics) once we return, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Lily had made some big developments while we’re gone - stay tuned! Either way, once we come back is major baby-proofing time.
I hope you all have a great week, and we’ll meet back here when we get back!
EDITED TO ADD: I forgot to mention one of Lily’s FAVORITE new activities! She did this for a good hour on our bed yesterday - she starts out sitting, then THROWS herself forward onto all fours, rocks back and forth a bit (optional), then plops on her tummy and rolls to her back and tries to sit up to do the whole process again. It’s really pretty cute, but not when she tries to practice this IN THE BATHTUB and in her crib when she’s supposed to be sleeping! Today for nap time she got herself on her tummy and scooted around the crib and ended up with her legs sticking through the slats and hitting the wall. Then, I think she felt stuck and got scared so started crying. I’m already starting to miss the days I could just sit her on the floor and let her play and she’s not even fully mobile yet! Every day she seems more like a little kid and less like a baby and I don’t know how it happened so stinkin’ FAST!
